Coffee talk "GeoSteering: An Introduction"

April 11, 2017

On April 11, 2017 Petro-Explorer will host coffee talk "GeoSteering: an introduction". The presenter is Jeff Webber and it will be held in PEI office at 2:30 pm.
Geosteering is one of the latest buzz words in industry. When drilling almost any well, it is important to position it optimally within the reservoir. To do so in real time, upcoming targets need may to be modified, often with little time to gather and interpret using a 'complete' data set. Information sets can often lead to conflicting conclusions. For example, Logging While Drilling tool responses may indicate the well is positioned properly, while down hole surveys suggest the position is not at all what was intended. Understanding the ellipse of uncertainty associated with the surveys might explain the problem, but unless all involved are aware of the issue, getting agreement to modify the well path in a timely manner could be challenging. An understanding of tool parameters and limitations, and established communication pathways regarding decision making must in place, so that target modifications are accepted rather than questioned.
About the Presenter: Jeff Webber, has worked in western Canada for 15 years as an Operations Geologist, including the last 5 years as consultant. Jeff has proven expertise managing drilling evaluation projects ranging from one to hundreds of locations. He started Geosteering wells in 2009, and has steered over 110 horizontal sections to date.

Coffee talk "Montney Case Study: Fault and Fracture Characterization"

March 9, 2017

On March 9, 2017 Petro-Explorers will host coffee talk "Montney Case Study: Fault and Fracture Characterization."
The presenter will be Azer Mustaqeem and it will be held in the main Petro-Explorers office at 2:30 PM. For those who are interested in registering for the workshop, please e-mail info@petroexplorers.com or raza@petroexplorers.com
The Montney Formation is a stratigraphic unit of lower Triassic age in Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. It is a major shale gas and shale oil resource. Gas is produced in both British Columbia and Alberta. Major operators include Progress Energy Canada Ltd, Royal Dutch Shell, Encana Corporation, Murphy Oil Corporation, ARC resources Ltd. and Advantage Oil and Gas Ltd. and oil is produced from the formation in Northern Alberta. We used the Montney Case study (3D seismic data) to show the application of various attributes (spectral decomposition, maximum curvature, dip, and contour curvature) and Thinned Fault Likelihood (TFL) plug-in of OpendTect to detect faults and fracture in this formation. Below figure shows one example of applying spectral decomposition and Thinned Fault Likelihood to the data.
